Kolontár is situated nearest to the red sludge containment pond, at a distance of 2 km (1.2 miles) from the dam wall; Devecser lies 5 km (3 miles) from the site of the disaster. The dam burst on 4 October has caused the greatest damage in these two localities. The next village is Somlóvásárhely, where it was not dwelling houses but gardens that were affected by the red sludge flood. The other nearby village is Somlójenő, 14 km (8.7 miles) from the reservoir.
